Museum on Main Street Exhibition @ SAN AUGUSTINE, TX

It doesn’t carry the name recognition of the Alamo, Nacogdoches, Goliad, or other key players in Texas’ history, but San Augustine in deep East Texas has plenty to boast about. It was the first Texas town to be laid out in the standard American grid system. When the 1832 plat detailing it all was recently pulled out of storage, among the signatures of witnesses was future Texas governor’s Sam Houston, who had a law office there.

These are a few of the stories that will be told when the Smithsonian’s Museum on Main Street (MoMS), an outreach program that engages small town audiences and brings revitalized attention to underserved rural communities, sets up its traveling exhibit here on Aug. 24 for six weeks. Of the more than 50 applicants across the state, seven Texas cities were selected for Crossroads: Change in Rural America, which will pop up in areas all over the U.S. After San Augustine, it heads to Clifton, Brenham, Rockport, Buffalo Gap, San Elizario, and Bandera.

Crossroads: Change in Rural America will tell the story of how rural communities have changed over the past 100 years, whether it be “progress or periods of difficulty,” says Mallory Laurel, special projects coordinator for heritage tourism of the Texas Historical Commission.

The commission teamed up with the Smithsonian to provide training for the cities and towns selected so that they can they can supplement the national exhibit—located in a spot of the town’s choosing—with artifacts and photos that tell the local story, too.

“One of the questions we posed to them in a workshop was, ‘Why here? Why these people, and why this place?’” Laurel says. “The more times you ask ‘why,’ the more interesting the story gets and the more you realize that what you have around you that you’ve taken for granted is actually really unique.”

Each city selected look at this as an opportunity to bring in visitors not just to see the exhibit but the area as a whole. On average, an extra 2,000 visitors are drawn to Museum on Main Street host cities over the six weeks the exhibit is displayed. The hope is the bump in tourism will give an economic boost to the communities.

San Augustine, today with a population of less than 2,000, plans to entice newcomers to see more of the city by just taking a walk down the street. Like many smaller downtowns, San Augustine’s has some windows on storefronts that are vacant. The town has commissioned local artists to fill them with paintings accompanied by pieces written by area historians. Windows into History will feature works like one of El Camino Real, the historic trail developed in the late 17th century.

“A lot of people don’t realize everything that San Augustine has to offer. We’re going to have all of that on display and ready to go when they’re here,” says Liz Jones, Main Street director for the city of San Augustine. “Hopefully it’ll give them an incentive to come back or tell people about it.”

Performance Announcement: “On Golden Pond” @ HEMPHILL LITTLE THEATRE

Click on image for FACEBOOK link:

"On Golden Pond" directed by Miles Harden will open Friday Sept 6th at 7pm for a 2-weekend run.

There's a rather grumpy chap called Norman Thayer, (Randy Tomlinson) as he's got older he's become quite a purveyor, of snide and sneering comments, of complaining, grieving laments, like a rusting, buckled, beat up, old conveyor; with his wife Ethel ( Kathy Tomlinson) they've settled down on golden pond, a place that they both love, and are so fond, then daughter Chelsea (Jennifer Kiser) passes by, with her new partner (Kellus Kiser) by her side, and a young lad (Tristan Hampton) that they leave there, and then they're gone; Thrown into the mix is Charlie the mailman (Tom Watterson) who still has a spark for Chelsea. It takes a while for the curmudgeon Norman to develop a liking for the boy, and to envelop, but the ice quite quickly thaws, as they fish for trout with jaws, at the end you'll feel refreshed, and full of hope.

This play runs Fridays Sept 6 & 13th at 7pm, Saturdays 6th & 14th at 7pm and Sundays Sept 8th & 15th at 3pm and tickets are $12 presale and $15 at the door available at Hammock Furniture, By Local, East Senior Center and online at www.hemphilllittletheatre.com

This show is sponsored by Donald & Annette Beasley, Hammock Furniture, Healthy Solutions, Native Pecan Vineyard and T.Alan Hart, Attorney -at-law.

Benefit Pig Roast @ THE SPEAKEASY LOUNGE: HEMPHILL, TX

Mark your calendars! October 12th we will be having a benefit for RGB. Live music, cold beer, raffles, and great food!

Click on image for FACEBOOK link:

: The following is a statement from RGB :

TIME TO SAY GOODBYE & THANK YOU

Sadly it’s time for The Rosevine Gravelhill Benefit to say goodbye and thank you to our community, sponsors, friends and followers. With costs tripling, very few volunteers and hardships within our own families we are no longer able to continue RGB. This year would have been 18 years we have served our community and we are proud to say we were part of it!! We would like to say thank you to our many sponsors that supported us year after year! We would also like to thank the many workers, volunteers, cookers, trailriders and friends that showed up year after year even when they didn’t want to! This decision did not come easy for us at RGB, we hope the public will understand and remember the event for all of the families we were able to help over 18 years.

The Speak Easy Lounge in Hemphill will be holding a pig roast on the evening of Oct.12th at 6:00 and they are donating the proceeds as a final fundraiser to RGB.

The flyer is attached above. We will be using the proceeds to help people that were on our list for this year. We have attached some pictures from the last benefit and from the year before! Enjoy! Please continue to help those in need when you are able to. It makes such a difference in a world that is increasingly lacking compassion. We love all of you! Thanks again for 18 years of AMAZING support!

We will miss you!
